How to open 3MF files on Android

A 3MF file is a 3D model made for printing. Android does not ship with a 3MF viewer, so tapping the file in your file manager usually offers nothing useful. You need a viewer that understands the format, and it helps to know what is inside the file so you can tell a real problem from a viewer’s limit.

What a 3MF file is

A 3MF is a ZIP archive that holds XML. The model itself sits in a part called 3D/3dmodel.model. Unlike an STL, which stores only triangles, a 3MF can also carry colours, materials, several objects, units and slicer settings. The format is maintained by the 3MF Consortium. (3MF specification)

That is why a 3MF from a slicer can show an eight-colour plate, while the same model saved as STL is a single flat shape.

Three ways to open one on a phone

  1. A 3D viewer app. Install a viewer that lists 3MF support, then open the file from the app’s picker or share it to the app from Gmail, Drive, WhatsApp or your file manager. This is the quick way to check a model you just received.
  2. Your slicer, on a computer. Slicers such as Bambu Studio, PrusaSlicer and Cura open 3MF files directly. You need this anyway to print, but it is not convenient when you are away from your desk.
  3. Peek inside as a ZIP. Because a 3MF is a ZIP archive, you can rename a copy from .3mf to .zip and browse it with a file manager. You will see the XML parts and any thumbnails. This tells you what is in the file, but it will not show you the model.

Why a 3MF can open grey or empty

Two things go wrong often, and both come from slicer exports rather than from the spec.

  • Empty model. Bambu Studio can keep the real geometry in separate files under 3D/Objects/ and leave the root model as a list of references. A viewer that reads only the root part finds no triangles and reports an empty file.
  • Grey model. Bambu Studio also keeps its filament colours outside the model XML, in its own settings files. A viewer that reads only the standard colour fields shows the model in one default colour. We cover that in why a Bambu Studio 3MF looks grey elsewhere.

Opening one with MeshView

MeshView opens 3MF and STL files from its picker, from a share or open-with intent, or straight out of a ZIP download. It reads the colours a 3MF stores, including the Bambu filament colours, and shows the model’s X, Y and Z size, triangle count, volume and surface area. If a file uses brush-painted colour regions, MeshView says so instead of silently showing the wrong colours: it reads those files but does not draw the painted areas.

Free use covers 3 new models a month, and re-opening a model you have already viewed is always free.

A quick sanity check after opening

Compare the size readout with what you expect. A 3MF carries its units, so a part that should be 40 mm and reads 40 mm is a good sign. If the numbers are far off, or the model has no colour when you expected some, the problem is in the file or the export, not your phone.
